MEET THE SECRETARIAT STAFF | Laura Dellplain, Project Manager

Thursday, 20 June 2019 Written by // Laura Dellplain Series // Meet the Secretariat Staff Tags // development, HIV, prevention

As an HIV tester and counselor during my university days and beyond, I learned very quickly that most people have more pressing issues to deal with in their lives than HIV prevention. At at Oberlin College, I often saw clients shortly after an unprotected sexual encounter. For most, condom use to protect against HIV and other STIs had to be negotiated alongside myriad influential experiences and other barriers – including insecurity around the sexual relationship, fear around the sexual encounter, school stress, mental illness, and financial hardship, just to name a few. The very fact that these clients had proactively sought out an HIV test, demonstrated to me that they were both aware of and concerned about HIV risk, but that the prevention methods available to them just did not meet their needs or circumstances.

Mathematical modelling and its potential to inform MPT development

Wednesday, 18 July 2018 Tags // cost-effective, development, impact, modelling, product

One of the ongoing challenges in the MPT field is that, because MPT products are not yet commercially available (aside from male and female condoms), we do not have ‘real world’ data to inform product development, introduction, and investment decisions. Given this, MPT product developers, researchers, and funders must grapple with critical questions, such as: How impactful do these products need to be for me to consider funding or starting a product development program? Is that impact potential achievable, and under what conditions? How efficacious would the product need to be? What is the market for the product? How many people would need to use the product correctly and consistently? What associated costs will make a product cost-effective or cost-saving?

MPT target product profiles

Monday, 22 January 2018 Tags // clinical, development, process, product, regulatory, target-setting, TPP

A critical function of the IMPT Secretariat is to serve as a knowledge manager for the MPT field. In this way, we collect and disseminate MPT-relevant resources, as well as synthesize data and stakeholder expertise into useful tools and frameworks in order to inform future work within the MPT field. While the IMPT Secretariat continues to develop new resources to meet the needs of an evolving field, we want to highlight a tool – originally developed in 2015 – that is still relevant to stakeholders in the MPT field today: generalized Target Product Profiles (TPPs) for intravaginal ring (IVR) MPTs and long-acting injectable MPTs.
